La Lotería Playing Cards

The Design:  I created a deck of cards that are a illustrative take on La Lotería, a Mexican Bingo game. The illustrations are created in block print style with simplified strokes and monochromatic colors for each suite of cards. Many of the characters are found in the traditional bingo game and were given an new illustrative makeover based on the style of the set. However, I created new characters to make a full face set of Queens. Each suite symbol is integrated into the design. The typography is very simple and contrast against the organic illustrations. Overall, the cards feel handmade and relate back to the authentic nature of the original game. The number cards have pinto bean icons to convey the number. In my family, we used pinto beans to denote which squares we had on our cards.

Why: Create a set of playing cards that work together in a system while following the traditional use of number cards and face cards. The cards should related to each other in theme and use a dynamic typography and color.
